Getting Connected – Network Devices

A look at different network devices and the functions they perform

There are a variety of different devices that can be used to connect other devices to a network such as; switches, routers and access points.  Other devices, such as Patch Panels, can be used to distribute network access throughout a building.  Due to the way that networking has evolved, older technology components, such as hubs, bridges and repeaters, can often still be found within network systems. An Overview of Network Types

A brief look at different network types

Definition of a Network
A network is a group of computers that are all connected together in order to share other connected resources. These resources include files, printers, databases and, of course, an internet connection.  Whether a network is a wired one or wireless, they will always be made up of a certain amount of network media such as;  Continue reading “An Overview of Network Types”

About SpenceTecUK.com

Information about the web site and it’s content

A Little Bit of History
This site originally started out over on Blogger in the early part of 2017 as a way to assist me in studying for my CompTIA A+ certification.  However, as often happens with my somewhat erratic multi-directional attention span, the site began to take on something that resembled a life of it’s own.  Once that started to happen, I quickly found that I wasn’t quite able to quite make the site what I wanted in it’s present incarnation.

At that point, I decided it was time to move home and on 30th/31st March 2017 I started moving home to where you’re reading this now.  Now that the move is over, the site is now taking a shape much closer to the one I had been visualising.

What’s Here?

Other than all of the above, there may be times when I’ll post something completely off the reservation that doesn’t fit into any of the above categories. Something that, for whatever reason, has made an impact on me and I’d like to share.

If you’ve got a question or a suggestion for something you’d like to see, please drop a line through the contact page.

Enjoy the ride!

Photo Log Book Week #4 – 02 April 2017 to 08 April 2017

Back from Singapore. Some heli flights & a little history. VA flights to Tokyo, London & Istanbul.

It’s been a slower week for my flying this week, with some personal stuff to attend to during the early part and working hard to get the site where I wanted it to be towards the end. Even so, I’ve managed to get a few hours in and even found a short while to get onto IVAO for the first time to try things out. Weekly Roundup – 07.04.17

Site moved and updated. This week on twitter and Coming Soon

Site Updates
It’s been a busy week over here in the SpenceTecUK camp with lots of changes being made to the site and some articles (to be posted next week) written up and lightly polished.

Among the changes that can be seen are:

  • The completed move across to a new home, here at SpenceTecUK.com
  • Addition of a much more comprehensive menu, to make it easier to find articles and pages on the site
  • Addition of a number of pages with information and links to different subjects and articles within the site.

This Weeks’ Articles

This Week on Twitter

You may or may not follow me on Twitter, but here are links to some of the best, worst or strangest (related) articles that I’ve seen, and retweeted, this week.

Coming Soon
Coming this week are a couple of articles around computer networking and associated devices, as well as information around creating high quality passwords and a potential aircraft review for FSX towards the end of next week.

Improving Your Routers’ Security

How to greatly improve the security of your home network.

That wireless router which sits, silent and unobtrusive, in the main room of your house or on a shelf somewhere near a telephone socket, providing that all important connection to the (virtual) outside world is locked up and safe, right?

Well, actually. No. Continue reading “Improving Your Routers’ Security”

Flight Simulator X

Flight Simulator X is Microsoft/Dovetail Games” latest offering in their long line of Flight Sim software.

Flight Simulator X
Flight Simulator X (more commonly known as FSX by it’s users) is Microsofts’ latest offering in their long line of Flight Sim software.  Despite it being the latest, FSX is now over ten years old with it’s original European version having been released on October 13 2006. Since it’s inception, FSX has seen two Service Pack updates (known as SP1 and SP2) and an the ‘Acceleration’ Expansion.  In 2014, Microsoft signed a licencsing deal with Dovetail Games who then took over development of the software. Alabeo’s Extra 300S (Payware/FSX & P3D)

A little write-up from my messing around in the Alabeo Extra 300S

The Extra 300S is a single seat variant of the original Extra 300 twin seat aerobatic light aircraft.  It’s one of the better known aerobatic planes and has been piloted to victory in any number of aerobatic competitions.  It’s also the craft favoured by The Blades Aerobatic Display Team, a well known team from the UK who have used the 300S for a number of years. Stunt flying and some touring in Papua New Guinea. Back to Sydney and a 777-200 flight to Singapore

This week my flying has been a little bit of a mix-and-match affair, with most of it being done in light aircraft. I have a piece of software called Airshow Pilot that’s centered around aerobatic flying and it offers a schedule of competitions to fly in.  This week, the competition was held in Port Moresby and this is where we’ll start off.
